Chongqing is a world-famous historical and cultural city with written records dating back to 3,000 years ago, the birthplace of the Bayu culture.

During the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, powerful tribal alliances formed on this land of Chongqing. They lived along the river and hunt in the mountains. They took giant snakes and white tigers as totems, collectively referred to as “Ba People”.

The era of Ba State started from the 21st century BC, in 316 BC (the Warring States Period), the Ba State was eventually destroyed by the Qin State. General Zhang Yi of the Qin State stationed troops in the place where the two rivers meet, built Jiangzhou City, which is the first city site in the history of Chongqing. The Three Kingdoms Period left many relics to Chongqing, such as the famous Zhangfei Temple in Yunyang.
In 583 AD, Emperor Yang Jian（Emperor Wen of Sui Dynasty）set up Yu Zhou here, hence the alternate name “Yu” of Chongqing.

In 1189 A.D., Zhao Dun (Emperor Guangzong of Southern Song Dynasty) was crowned King and proclaimed himself as emperor successively in two months, and then he named Gong Zhou where he was as Chongqing，meaning “double celebration”，Chongqing was named after it.

The War between Song and Yuan and years of war in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties led to a sharp decline in the population of the Ba-Shu area, nine out of ten families were gone. It was not until the early years of the Qing Dynasty when the government promulgated the “mass migration of peasants from Huguang to Sichuan Province ”policy, that the local economy was gradually restored and developed.

In 1890, the “Additional provisions of the Yantai Treaty” was signed, Chongqing became the first open port and commercial port along the Yangtze River in mainland China. Many Countries set up consulates and opened concessions, which promoted the prosperity of industry and commerce. Chongqing gradually developed into a major industrial town and an economic center in western China.

After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the National Government moved to Chongqing in 1940, and Chongqing became the capital of wartime. In 1946, the National Government returned to the capital of Nanjing.

After the founding of New China, in order to speed up the construction of the Three Gorges Project and solve the problems of immigration, in 1997, Chongqing became a municipality directly under the Central Government, and merged Wanxian, Fuling and Lijiang in eastern Sichuan, Chongqing became the largest “city” in the world.
