Juyong Pass —One of the Great Wall’s Most Prestigious Impregnable Pass

Juyong Pass is located in Changping District, 60 km from the urban districts of Beijing.

Juyong Pass along with Zijing Pass, Daoma Pass, Gu Pass are the four famous Pass of West Beijing in the Ming Dynasty.

Juyong Pass was first named in the Qin Dynasty, it was said that when the emperor QinShiHuang built the Great Wall, he orderd the prisoners, soldiers and pressed laborers to migrate here, it took the meaning of “migrating mediocre persons” . During the Spring and Autumn Periods, <Springs and Autumns of Master Lü> recorded “there are nine fortresses under the sun, one is JuYong Pass “. The existing Juyong Pass Great Wall was bulit by great general Xu Da, deputy general Chang Yuchun in the 1st year of Hongwu (1368), it has been rebuilt in the successive dynasties since then.

The two major gateways of Juyong Pass Great Wall scenic areas are magnificent, the north of the Great Wall is Beikou, Nankou is in the south, the pass city is located in the canyon of the  north of Nankou. The pass city has north and south gates, the Urn City( Barbican ) is near the south gate , a throat channel connects the north and south gates.

There are towering mountains, peaks rising one after another, lush forests on both sides of the pass city, it was listed as one of “Eight Great Sights of Yanjing” in the Jin Dynasty as early as 800 years ago, known as “Juyong Die Cui”.

 There is a white marble platform in the center of pass city , called “Cloud Terrace”, was originally the base of buildings, a Crossing Road Pagoda and Tai’an Temple were once built on the stage, now only the platform is survival.

The carvings of “Cloud Terrace” are concentrated on the Vaulted Door and Cave, fine and delicate.

Juyong Pass’s traffic is convenient, Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, Badaling Expressway run across the pass. There are highway and railway stations in Juyong Pass.
