The National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) – – – – the Main Stadium of the 29th Olympic Games(2008)

The National Stadium is located in the south of the central area of Beijing Olympic Park, the service life of main structure design is 100 years, seismic fortification intensity is 8. The total area is 210,000 square meters, and the construction area is 258,000 square meters, there are about 91 thousand audience seats.

The main building space is saddle oval shaped, 294 meters wide east-west, 333 meters long from north to south, 69 meters high, forming the whole giant three-dimensional saddle-shaped woven steel truss “Bird’s Nest” structure, the total steel usage is 42,000 tons. The concrete stands are divided into three layers: the upper, the middle and the lower, the concrete structure of the stands is the reinforced concrete frame – shear wall structure system with 1 underground layer and 7 layers on the ground. The steel structure and the upper part of the concrete stands are completely disengaged from each other and not connected to each other, enclosing with each other in form and the bottom is located on a connected foundation base plate.

The steel structure of National Stadium’s roof is covered with dual-layer  structure, that is the upper transparent ETFE layer fixed between the top chords of the steel structure and the lower translucent PTFE acoustic ceiling fixed under the bottom chord of the steel structure and the side wall of the inner-ring.

The opening and closing ceremonies, track and field competitions and football finals of the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games were held here. Later the National Stadium becomes large professional venues for the public to participate in sports activities and enjoy the sports entertainment, and becomes a landmark of sports buildings and Olympic heritage.
